# Export and render

> Check the video is ready, preview each format, and render full-quality MP4 files to download.

The Export step (**Preview & export**) turns your built video into full-quality MP4 files, one for each format you need. Rendering happens on your computer, in the background.

## Check it's ready

At the top of the step, the **Ready to render?** checklist shows whether everything the render needs is in place. For an animated video it checks:

- **Script written**
- **Voiceover synced** (or "Voiceover missing or out of date")
- **Animation built** (or "Animation not built yet")
- **Animation matches the voiceover** (or "Animation timed to an older voiceover")

Each item that isn't ready has a **Fix** link that takes you to the step where you fix it. For Event Recaps the checklist also covers the media and the storyboard; see [Event recaps](/docs/videos/event-recaps).

## Preview each format

Below the checklist you can preview the video in each format before you render. Watch every format you plan to use: a layout that works in landscape can feel cramped in a vertical reel.

## Formats and sizes

| Format | Size (pixels) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Reel 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts |
| Landscape 16:9 | 1920 × 1080 | Websites, YouTube, decks |
| Square 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | LinkedIn and other feeds |

Every render is an MP4 file (H.264) at 30 frames per second. All plans include all three formats.

## Render the video

1. In the **Render** card, tick the formats you want.
2. Click **Render video** (or **Render N videos** if you ticked more than one).

Renders run in the background. You can keep working in DemoVexa, open another project, or close the browser tab. The project card and the **Activity** page show progress, and DemoVexa can send a system notification when a render finishes if you turn on **Notify me when builds and renders finish** on the **Activity** page.

> [!NOTE]
> The first render on a new computer downloads Chrome Headless Shell, which Remotion uses to draw the frames. This only happens once.

## Download

Each finished render has an **MP4** button. Click it to download the file.

You can also play and download finished videos from the Projects page: hover over the project's card, click the play button and pick a version. See [Projects and video types](/docs/videos/projects#play-a-finished-video).

## A format that hasn't been built

If you want a format that wasn't chosen in the brief, the video hasn't been built for it yet. The Export step shows **Ask Claude to add it** next to that format. Click it and Claude builds the missing format; then render it as usual.

If you try to render a format that wasn't built, the render fails with a message like "Could not find composition …Reel". The fix is the same: use **Ask Claude to add it**.

> [!TIP]
> Each extra format adds build time. Choose your formats in the brief when you can, so Claude builds them all at once.

## Rendering without a voiceover

If the voiceover is missing or out of date when you click **Render video**, DemoVexa asks **Render without a voiceover?** The video will then have music only. Click **Render anyway** to go ahead, or cancel and generate the voiceover in the [Voice step](/docs/videos/voice) first.

> [!WARNING]
> An animated video is timed to its voiceover. If the voiceover changed after the build, re-sync the animation in the Animate step before you render, or the clicks won't match the words.

## Renders and your plan

Renders count towards your DemoVexa plan's monthly allowance. See [Plans and usage](/docs/account/plans-and-usage).
