Short answer
To launch on Product Hunt, set up a personal account well ahead (new accounts wait a week before posting), hunt the product yourself, fill in the launch page with a 60-character tagline, gallery and first comment, and schedule it for 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time, up to a month ahead. On the day, reply to every comment and ask people for feedback, never directly for upvotes.
Knowing how to launch on Product Hunt is mostly knowing the house rules and doing the boring preparation early. The platform's mechanics are public: Product Hunt runs a launch guide and help center that answer most of the questions people argue about in forums. Everything below was checked against those pages in October 2026. Where Product Hunt doesn't say something, we haven't filled the gap with folklore.
This page covers the whole launch. The video asset gets its own page: demo video for Product Hunt has the gallery specs, length and opening.
How a Product Hunt launch works in 2026
The site runs in 24-hour days on Pacific Time, and launches go live at 12:01 a.m. Product Hunt calls that the best time if you can plan ahead, since it gives your launch the full day. You can schedule a launch up to one month ahead, or launch immediately.
The homepage leaderboard moves through the day based on upvotes, comments, time since submission and other factors Product Hunt doesn't publish, because, as it says, publishing them would make the ranking easier to game. If spam shows up in your upvotes or comments, expect to rank lower.
Featuring is an editorial decision
The homepage shows featured products by default, and the Product Hunt team decides what gets featured. Its featuring guidelines judge launches on being useful, novel, well crafted and creative, and say they only feature products that are available now. Waitlists don't qualify unless people get immediate access. Directories, templates, courses and services are generally left off the featured list.
Products that aren't featured still go live: they appear in the full list under "See all of today's products" and can still collect comments and upvotes. Product Hunt says its featuring decisions are final in the vast majority of cases, so get the product genuinely usable before you pick a date.
How to launch on Product Hunt: account, hunter and team
Product Hunt recommends joining three months or more before your launch, and new accounts must wait one week before they can post a product. Spend that time in Discussions and on other people's launches. A maker whose first visible activity is their own launch looks exactly like what it is.
- Hunt it yourself. Product Hunt actively encourages self-hunting and says 79% of featured posts and 60% of #1 Product of the Day winners were self-hunted. Paying someone to hunt your product is against its guidelines.
- Use personal accounts only. Company accounts are prohibited, and the community guidelines require profiles that look human, represent an individual and use a non-company username.
- Add co-makers by their Product Hunt username, and get them to create accounts well before launch day so their profiles aren't brand new.
- Set goals before the date. Product Hunt suggests measurable goals tied to the business: comments, followers, signups, website traffic, even hiring. Rank is one measure, not the only one.
Product Hunt launch timeline: 4 weeks before to a week after
This is the plan we'd run for a small SaaS team. The account work above should already be done; the clock below starts once the product is usable by strangers.
| When | What to do | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 4 weeks before | Pick the date and decide weekday or weekend; draft tagline, description and first comment; list who you'll tell | Date chosen, draft post saved (it auto-saves) |
| 3 weeks before | Make the gallery, thumbnail and demo video; write the launch email and social posts | All media at the right sizes, video on YouTube |
| 2 weeks before | Add co-makers, launch tags (up to 3), pricing and any promo; ask a few users for honest feedback on the page | Post complete and reviewed by someone outside the team |
| 1 week before | Schedule the launch for 12:01 a.m. Pacific; tell your existing community the date; prepare a launch-day rota across time zones | Scheduled, people know the day, replies are covered |
| Launch day | Post the first comment, share the direct link, reply to every comment, fix anything people report | Every comment answered within the hour |
| Days 1–7 after | Thank supporters, follow up with commenters, share feedback with the team, claim and edit your Product Page | Feedback written up, follow-ups sent |
On the weekday question, Product Hunt's own data says weekend launches get 15% more clicks on the "Visit" button than weekday launches, and that smaller teams and side projects often do well on weekends while larger companies tend to launch on weekdays. Its overall advice is to launch on the day you're most prepared.
What to put on your launch page
Product Hunt's content checklist sets the limits as of October 2026. The product URL must be a direct link to your main product page: shortened links and tracking parameters such as UTMs aren't accepted. The name is the product name only, with no emojis unless they're part of the name.
- Tagline: 60 characters at most. Say what it does and for whom; "Automatic invoice reminders for freelancers" beats a slogan.
- Description: the launch guide allows up to 500 characters, but an older help article says 260, so make the first 260 characters work on their own.
- Thumbnail: square, 240×240 recommended, under 3MB. GIFs don't autoplay, so the first frame must make sense alone.
- Gallery: at least two images, 1270×760 recommended, plus an optional YouTube video. Our Product Hunt demo video guide covers what to put in it.
- Extras: up to 3 launch tags, up to 3 shoutouts, pricing (free, paid, or paid with a free trial or plan), and a promo, which needs the offer, a code and an expiry date.
Write a real first comment
You're prompted for a maker first comment when you submit, and Product Hunt says 70% of products that won Product of the Day, Week or Month had one. Tell the story in plain words: why you built it, who it's for, what it does today, what it costs, and the specific feedback you want. Skip the marketing voice. Product Hunt's guidance is humble, helpful and simple.
Launch day rules: upvotes, sharing and comments
The one rule Product Hunt spells out most clearly: you can't ask people directly to upvote. Its community guidelines list mass messaging, asking for upvotes, bots and incentivizing upvotes as spam, and its launch guide says it may ask you to remove social posts that ask for votes. Ask for feedback, comments and help spreading the word instead.
- Don't run contests that require or reward upvotes; Product Hunt says it may unfeature products that keep doing it. A separate contest on the same day is fine.
- Don't blast hundreds of people with the same message or email scraped lists.
- Tell communities you're already part of. Launch day isn't the moment to start posting on Reddit or Indie Hackers if you've never been there.
- Link straight to your launch. Product Hunt says there's no penalty for linking directly to your product page and that it encourages it.
- Use your email list and in-app banner. Product Hunt calls email one of your strongest tools on the day.
Then stay on the page. Reply to every comment with something specific, thank people who found bugs, and ship small fixes during the day if you can. Commenters notice when the makers are listening. A launch email, a short demo clip and social posts take time to make, so build them weeks ahead; our product launch video ideas list the clips worth making.
After launch day: follow-up, Product Page and relaunching
Product Hunt suggests promoting the launch page for about two weeks after the day, then pointing people to your Product Page, which collects reviews and awards over the product's life. Request edit access to the Product Page as soon as you launch, or claim it later. Reply to late comments as carefully as you did on the day, and write up the feedback for the team while it's fresh.
You can launch again when you ship significant changes. If you submit within two months of your last launch, Product Hunt asks whether it's a major update; for big changes you can request an earlier relaunch with a form that explains why. A rebuilt product with a fresh demo video makes that case more easily than a list of small fixes. Our SaaS product launch checklist covers the rest of a launch beyond Product Hunt.
Questions
What time should I launch on Product Hunt?
Schedule it for 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time, which Product Hunt calls the best time if you can plan ahead because the site runs on a 24-hour Pacific day. You can schedule up to one month in advance.
Is it free to launch on Product Hunt?
Yes, Product Hunt says launching is 100% free, and anyone with a personal account can post a product. Paying people to hunt your product or to send traffic goes against its guidelines.
Do I need a hunter with lots of followers?
No, Product Hunt encourages makers to hunt their own products and says there's no discernible advantage to using a third-party hunter. Most featured posts and most #1 Product of the Day winners were self-hunted.
Can I tell people my launch is live?
Yes, share the direct link with your users, followers and communities you already take part in. Ask for feedback and comments rather than upvotes, and don't mass-message people or offer anything in return for votes.
