How long should a demo video be? Lengths by type and channel

Length is decided by who's watching and why they pressed play. A tutorial can run five minutes. A homepage video that does the same will lose most of its viewers.

Short answer

Most demo videos should run 60 to 90 seconds for a first look on a homepage or landing page, 15 to 45 seconds for social feeds, and 2 to 5 minutes for tutorials or full walkthroughs, where the viewer came for the answer. Wistia's data shows viewers watch about half of a typical video under a minute, so put the key moment early whatever the length.

"How long should a demo video be?" has no single answer, but it has a reliable rule: the less the viewer already wants to watch, the shorter the video. A stranger scrolling a feed gives you seconds. A customer stuck on a setup step will happily watch four minutes if minute two answers their question.

This guide gives lengths by video type and by channel, what engagement data says, and the platform limits that apply as of October 2026. Limits tell you what a platform allows, not what works, so treat them as a ceiling, not a target.

What the engagement data says about demo video length

The most useful public numbers come from Wistia, whose 2026 State of Video Report analyzed more than 13 million videos on its platform. Videos under a minute averaged a 52% engagement rate, meaning viewers typically watch about half. Product videos under a minute averaged 50%. Educational and tutorial videos between one and five minutes typically held viewers for more than half their length (Wistia).

Two findings matter most for demos. Most viewers leave around the halfway mark, whatever the length. And Wistia's recommendation by goal puts awareness and social video under a minute, and how-tos and product demos at one to five minutes.

  • Put the product's key moment in the first half. If it arrives at 1:40 in a two-minute video, most people won't see it.
  • A short video isn't automatically better: a one-minute tutorial that skips a step fails the viewer who needed it.
  • Engagement percentages fall as length rises, but the viewers who stay through a long tutorial are usually the most invested.

Platform length limits as of October 2026

Here are the current maximums on the main social platforms, checked against their own help pages. These change often, so check again before a big launch.

  • YouTube Shorts: square or vertical videos up to three minutes long are classed as Shorts (for uploads after October 15, 2024). Anything wider, such as 16:9, is treated as a regular video (YouTube Help).
  • Instagram Reels: Instagram's help center says you can record reels up to 20 minutes, but its creator FAQ says it recommends videos of three minutes or less to people who don't follow you (Instagram for Creators).
  • LinkedIn: videos can be up to 15 minutes and 5 GB, with a minimum of 3 seconds from desktop (LinkedIn Help).
  • X: accounts without a paid subscription can upload videos up to 140 seconds; paid subscribers can post much longer ones (X Help).
  • TikTok: limits have changed several times and differ by account and by whether you record in the app or upload. We couldn't confirm one current figure on TikTok's own help pages, so check the uploader before you cut.

Notice the pattern: every platform allows far more than a demo should use. Instagram's three-minute recommendation and YouTube's three-minute Shorts cap are the useful signals, and a 30–45 second cut sits well inside both. For the 9:16 version itself, see resizing video for Instagram Reels.

Homepage and landing pages

Use two videos, not one compromise. A silent 15–30 second loop in the hero shows what the product does, and a play button opens the 60–90 second narrated tour with sound for people who want more. Our blog post on SaaS demo video length goes deeper on the homepage case.

Email and sales

In a cold or nurture email, link to something under 90 seconds. In a follow-up after a call, two to four minutes is fine, because the buyer asked for it and the video is about their use case.

YouTube and the help center

Here people search for an answer, so completeness beats brevity. A three-minute tutorial with chapters serves viewers better than a 60-second one that skips the step they were stuck on. YouTube chapters need a first timestamp of 00:00, at least three timestamps and chapters of at least 10 seconds (YouTube Help).

Product Hunt and launch posts

Launch-day visitors are curious but busy. Aim for 30–90 seconds, show the product in the first few seconds and make sure it works muted. The demo video for Product Hunt guide covers the launch page specifically.

How to cut a demo video down to length

Almost every first cut runs long. The fix is in the script, not the edit: speeding up the voice or trimming pauses makes a video feel rushed without making it clearer.

  1. Count the words. At roughly 140 to 160 spoken words a minute (an approximation; time your own narrator), a 60-second demo has room for about 110 to 130 words once you allow pauses.
  2. Delete the intro. Logo stings, "welcome to" and company history are the cheapest seconds to cut.
  3. Keep one task. If the script covers two workflows, make two videos.
  4. Cut whole scenes, not frames. Removing a scene saves ten seconds; trimming every scene by half a second saves four and makes it choppy.
  5. Make cutdowns from the master. A 90-second tour gives you a 30-second social clip by keeping the hook, one step and the result.

Cutdowns are easier when the video is built rather than recorded. DemoVexa, for instance, renders 16:9, 9:16 and 1:1 versions from the same project and times scenes to the voiceover, so a shorter script produces a shorter video without re-editing by hand. If you're editing a screen recording, the same principle applies: shorten the script and re-cut to the new narration. The product demo script template has a word budget for each length.

Questions

Is a 3-minute demo video too long?

Not for a tutorial, a sales follow-up or a full product tour on YouTube, where the viewer chose to watch. It's too long for a homepage hero or a social feed, where 15 to 90 seconds works better and Instagram, for example, recommends three minutes or less for reaching new audiences.

What is the ideal length for a SaaS demo video on a homepage?

About 60 to 90 seconds for the narrated tour, plus an optional 15 to 30 second silent loop in the hero. Show the product within the first few seconds and keep the most important moment in the first half.

Does video length affect SEO?

Length on its own isn't a ranking factor you can tune, but a video that answers the query fully and keeps people watching is more useful, and that's what search engines reward.
